Spring in NYC: Chinatown & Lower East Side Portrait Session | NYC Photographer

The first warm days of spring in New York City always have a special energy. After months of cold and gray, the city wakes up—streets fill with people, parks come alive, and there’s a collective sense of excitement in the air. That was exactly the atmosphere on March 17, 2023, when I met up with a client visiting NYC for a solo portrait session. Instead of the usual tourist spots, we decided to explore Chinatown and the Lower East Side, letting the city guide our shoot. The result? A collection of portraits that felt effortless, vibrant, and full of personality.

One of the highlights of the session happened in the heart of Chinatown when we stopped for bubble tea. The neighborhood was bustling—locals weaving through markets, the scent of fresh food in the air, and a perfect mix of sunshine and city sounds. Rather than rushing to our next location, we paused, took in the moment, and let the vibe of the city shape the shoot. This led to some of my favorite candid shots—genuine laughter, relaxed expressions, and a true reflection of the client enjoying her time in the city.

As we continued exploring, we found a quiet bench in Rapkin-Gayle Plaza, a brief escape from the fast-paced streets. The client sat down, soaking in the spring warmth, and that’s when I captured my favorite portrait of the day—her relaxed, smiling, completely in the moment. It’s these kinds of in-between moments that make a session feel personal and real.

Because this was an impromptu, unscripted session, my approach was to blend candid and posed photography. We walked, talked, and let the surroundings inspire us. Each new street, mural, and park brought out a fresh sense of excitement, which translated beautifully in the images. By keeping things natural and conversational, the client was able to be herself, allowing me to capture photos that truly reflected her experience.

Spring is the perfect time for a photo refresh—whether you’re marking a special trip, celebrating a new season, or just wanting updated portraits that feel like you. Consider booking with a professional New York City photographer to capture you at your best. Natural light, the city as a backdrop, and your style all come together to create something unique. My bookings are now open through July 2025, but spots are filling quickly! Let’s plan your session and make some unforgettable images together. Start booking now.
